Prince Rainier

Died April 6th, 2005

Europe "saddened" by Rainier's death

Monaco's Prince Rainier is being remembered warmly by European leaders after his death today. French President Jacques Chirac says the 81-year-old prince "forged Monaco's originality."

Rainier was Europe's longest serving monarch after taking the thrown in 1949. Britain's Queen Elizabeth now holds that distinction.

The queen said through a palace statement that she was "saddened" by the death.

And the Council of Europe's secretary general says Rainier was able to combine Monaco's uniqueness with an openness to the rest of Europe.
