Suffolk Legislator Maxine Postal dies
Friday January 02, 2004
(Hauppauge, Long Island-AP) -- The former presiding officer of the Suffolk County Legislature - Maxine Postal - has died. Newsday reports that Postal died last night - just one day after she resigned from the legislature because she had a rare, fatal disease. She was 61.
Despite her declining health, Postal ran for re-election last November for what would have been her eighth and final term because of term limits.
Postal was diagnosed in early December with Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, a fatal brain disorder that causes rapidly progressive dementia and loss of motor skills.
Postal was divorced and is survived by two sons from that marriage.
