Memorial likely for top UK judge

A memorial service is likely to be held in New Zealand this week for the influential British judge, Lord Denning, who died on Saturday.

Lord Denning was a judge for 38 years, retiring at the age of 83 in 1982.

The President of the New Zealand Law Commission, Justice Baragwanath, says Lord Denning was a champion of the underdog, spearheading law changes to protect the rights of women and indigenous peoples.

He says Lord Denning modernised the law in Britain and subsequently New Zealand and his death is a considerable loss.

Last Thursday more than 200 people gathered at the Auckland Concert Chamber to pay tribute to Lord Denning on the occasion of his 100th birthday.
