Tribute: Iron Eyes Cody

[from TV Guide Online]

Standing by smokestacks and litter, with a single tear running down his cheek, Iron Eyes Cody became an icon of American advertising with a memorable public-service announcement that first appeared in 1971. Cody, 94 (by most accounts), died at his home in Los Angeles on January 4.

A veteran of more than 80 films, as well as guest roles on Bonanza, Gunsmoke and Rawhide, he is best remembered for the Keep America Beautiful campaign. "He aroused the feeling of individual responsibility to the environment," KAB president Ray Empson told TV Guide. "He lived these beliefs." -Brendan Morgan
