Alice Faye

1915 - 1998

Alice Faye, the blond and beaming queen of the 20th Century Fox musicals of the 1930s and 1940s, died of cancer Saturday in Rancho Mirage, Calif. She was 83. Faye, voted the No. 1 box office star by theater owners in 1939, starred in films such as In Old Chicago, Alexander's Ragtime Band and Tin Pan Alley. Her best-known song: You'll Never Know. Tired of making musicals - ''We changed costumes and leading men, and off we'd go and make another one,'' she once said - Faye walked out of her contract in the mid-1940s. She later co-starred with her husband, bandleader Phil Harris, on a successful radio show. Picked by Mr. Baseball
